GIS and Computer Section of the Pakistan Forest Institute (PFI) is the most recent development to meet the challenges of the new era of Information Technology in the country. This Brach was established in 1998 with the assistance of International Centre for Integrated Mountains Development (ICIMOD).


IN 2003, the GIS Section was provided with necessary hardware and software by the Forestry Sector Research and Development Project of the Federal Government. In 2013, the GIS Lab was further strengthened by the Carbon Stock Assessment Project with provision of latest computer systems, high resolution satellite imageries and trained manpower.

Activities of the GIS & Computer Branch


  • Estimation of Forest cover of Pakistan using satellite imageries and preparing a forest Atlas of Pakistan.

  • Estimation of landuse changes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as per IPCC and REDD+ requirements

  • Forest cover change assessment of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since 2000

  • Preparation of biomass and carbon stock maps for all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

  • Establishment of Forest Reference Emission Level for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

  • Development of Forestry digital data base of all the Provinces including AJK & Northern Areas.

  • Capacity Building of officers & staff of all provincial forest departments in the field of GIS & Remote Sensing.

  • Specialized training courses for GIS professionals and forest officers in forest cover mapping and estimation of biomass and carbon stock for REDD+

  • Support to forestry students and other graduates in conducting their research




  • Prepared landcover Atlas of Pakistan with district-wise landuse maps and statistics in 2012 

  • Trained more than 100 officers of provincial forest departments and other organizations through 6 training courses on application of GIS/RS in the context of REDD+

  • Preapred landuse maps of District Mansehra, Abbotabad, Haripur and Battagram as per IPCC requirements in 2015

  • Conducted 10 short training courses in Computer Technology for PFI staff and students.

  • Conducted 12 National level GIS & RS short training courses for different organizations, depaersity students and individuals
