Abstract/Summary
Introduction/General
The genus Acacia, comprising more than 500 species of shrubs and trees, is very widely distributed in the tropics and sub-tropics. The presence of genetic variation within the species and the occurrence of natural Acacia hybrids is quite common. It also contains a number of valuable species such as A. arabica, A. cyanophylla, A. Senegal and the tan wattles. A pioneer hybridization work in the tan wattles have been, recently, started in South Africa with the object of breeding more valuable tan producing strains. This being an interesting plant genus, from a number of points, it was considered worthwhile to study the somatic chromosomes of some of its species and hybrids.
