Abstract/Summary
Introduction/General
The production of rosin and turpentine from the raw resin of pine trees ranks among the major forest industries. These commodities find use for a large variety of purposes. Rosin is extensively employed in the manufacture of soap, paints and varnishes, linoleum, oil cloth, sealing wax and lubricating compounds. Turpentine is chiefly used in the manufacture of paints and varnishes in addition to its great demand for pharmaceutical preparations and as a solvent in several industrial processes. These products are also termed naval stores because in the days of wood ships they were used in enormous quantities for sealing hulls and decks of new vessels and for the maintenance of old ships in service.
