Abstract/Summary
Introduction/General
The Bara land extends in a long strip from Gurdaspur to Khanewal along the Ravi river, but is mostly found in the ‘Ganji Bar’ tract of the Montgomery district of the Punjab. The whole area is flat, with scattered perennial dunes and on a sunny day from a distance it presents the phenomenon of mirage. It is a type of alkali soil heavily impregnated with sodium salts which form sodium clay. The formation of the funes as a result of xerosere can be divided into three stages. The pioneer stage plants are most characteristic of this region and have very uniform characters. The intermediate stage is dominated by Suaeda fruticosa Forsk. The climax stage is dominated by buried trees of Prosopis spicigera Linn, whose small branches only are outside the dunes.
